Overview
The term banner usually connotes a large, rectangular cloth, vinyl, or other composite material bearing an advertising message, slogan, and/or signage. A banner communicates in a bold, in-your-face manner but it can leave a long-lasting impression on a particular audience. A banner differs from a large poster in that the medium the message is conveyed upon is usually more durable and less sensitive to common elements such as wind, weather, and water. Overall, a banner can be a helpful advertising medium because its visual impact communicates beyond the limitations of flyers, posters, postcards, etc.
Design
In times past, banners were commonly crafted using cloth or woven fabric material. However, these material choices did not give the durability needed to overcome the natural elements and banners had to be recreated on a continual basis. Computer graphic advances and printing technologies combined with advances in polymer and synthetic material generation have yielded a far more effective banner design and creation. Durability alone has increased tremendously with the application of cost-effective printing strategies and banner materials. Many designs and/or graphic layouts can be uploaded into a computer and can be printed upon a long-lasting material with minimal effort and a short time frame. Alas, banners have become cheaper to produce while having a longer shelf life than in years past.
