Catalogs are generally associated with the enterprise of mail-order endeavors. For instance, most consumers are aware of catalogs mailed to their residences. The mailed catalogs are filled with pictures, diagrams, and descriptions of products and/or services for sale by the catalog distributor. An interested consumer may simply follow the ordering and mailing instructions and in time will receive the goods and/or services ordered.
History
The use of catalogs to link consumers with various goods and/or services dates back to early American colonies and settlements. At the time, many potential consumers were spread out over the greater United States without centralized access to particular goods and/or services. Early catalogs allowed these consumers to purchase much needed goods and/or services via the United States mail service and their orders could be delivered to their remote locations. In time, catalogs increased their product and service offerings to keep up with the demands of their national consumers.
Modern Application
Technology has certainly had its share in providing consumers access to goods and/or services on a global scale. For instance, many on-line companies offer their wares to consumers via web-based catalogs on their web sites. However, may of these same companies often send out print versions of their on-line catalogs to keep pace with their growing customer base. In fact, having a web based presence and print catalog presence can ensure a larger customer reach.
